Back the truck up

Ok, I’m backing up. I had made the attempt to leave the great 1and1 hosting – only to fail. It turns out they’re not that slow.

I tried to go with a company called FatCow. Yeah, laugh all you like. But it’s true. Turns out – when you pay $44 a year for hosting you’re paying for what you get. Lousy service and excessively slow servers. So, I turned tail and ran back to a host that is fairly fast – though not the fastest.

The lessons you learn I suppose.

BUT – now I can get back to blogging. Maybe regain some of the traffic I sadly lost in the whole “attempt to get a new web host” phase.

On the flip side – I’m building a few sites. Still trying to build Alcove Alley. I have a package plan that I’ll be implementing very soon.

Studio646 – if all goes well – will start being built into HOPEFULLY an empire of mini-blogs. From stories to RSS feeds to just a flat out profile website. I’m aiming for something that will be self sufficient and get a ton of traffic.

I have a few paid clients I’m slowly working on. I’m also working on a few projects with some friends that will hopefully put me up on the food chain above pond scum.

All-in-all … I’m back. And I’m hoping to get the party started .. again.

The way of the hard drive

seagate I have a Seagate 160gb external hard drive that I keep at work. It has a lot of files on it, software, music, graphics, photos … you name it. Yesterday I decided to take it home to transfer stuff off of that and onto my system at home and visa versa. Figured I could always use a bit more music selection.

So, took it home and grabbed a power supply. Take note: It was different than the original PSU but I figured I’d go for the same wattage/voltage and we’d be good.

Well, apparently it wasn’t the same and I heard a ‘pop’ and smelled a rank smell. Needless to say, the hard drive is now dead.

I tell you this as a two-fold warning.

1) Don’t get in such a hurry that you don’t want to unhook the right power supply for your external drives. Not worth the saved two minutes.

2) Remember to backup your backups. Yes, this was my backup drive I was using regularly. I’m pretty miffed about it. I’ve lost a lot of information.

What really stinks if I can’t even open the casing to try and get the hard drive out. Seagate uses some wacked out screws to hold things together. So I’m out of luck.

And that’s my sob story for the day.

The Lost – Free Desktop Wallpaper

Third installment of this lovely feature called ‘free desktop wallpaper’ *play theme music*

Ok, I need some theme music. I’ll get right on that.

This weeks installment is an older design. It was originally called ‘TV is the Devil’ and was made just as an expression piece. But I resized and pushed it around and TADA! Here we are.

Enjoy.

The nightmare realms

This was a weekend for nightmares. Which is actually strange since I feel quite rested today.

Saturday started with two, yes two, in a row. The first was the worse feeling. I was in a garage and I was being attacked by some evil spirit of some sort. It was pretty frightning but Carolyn woke me up before anything back actually happened. I guess I was breathing pretty weird in real life (in my dream I was panting like mad).

The second dream wasn’t as scary, but pretty scary anyway. I was driving down a high way and Aidan (two year old son) was sitting on my lap – no seat belt. Suddenly I lost control of the car. I flung him to the back seat yelling to put his seat belt on fast, but it was too late and we careened off the road. Carolyn, again, saved me from the worst of it by waking me up. Poor girl didn’t get much sleep that night.

Last night I had another nightmare, though I don’t remember anything about it, only that it made me jump REALLY high in bed. It wasn’t a “oh I fell in my sleep” jerk, but I nearly jumped right out of bed. Pretty weird.

So I don’t know if anyone else had nightmares this weekend, but something was going on in my mind!

because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” John 4:4b (KJV)

U.S. employers cut 80,000 jobs in March

I read the news from time to time and this article I came to (actually was a link in my Hotmail) talked ab out how over 80,000 people lost their jobs in March. [Article Link]

It honestly makes me laugh … not a mirthful laugh, such as “Haha you have no job” but more of an ironic, you people are idiots laugh. And let me clarify, I’m not laughing at anyone who lost the jobs – but actually those in power who are proposing “fixes”.

The Bush administration are saying that the stimulus package that’s being given is going to help boost the economy. While I’ll be happy for the $1500 or whatever we’ll get, I doubt it’s going to boost anything. If it does, it will be a very brief increase and that’s it. I think they’re hoping people will spend it all and make the companies more money, which will theoretically give people more jobs. I think it will mostly be spent right away, but you’ll not see many companies hiring simply because a few extra sales. Companies will be happy they can pay their current employees.

Democrats proposal is to give an extended unemployment checks and such to people who lost their jobs. And I say, it sounds good – but let’s take a look at the current amount of people who already abuse this system. If they know they’ll get more checks and benefits, what will truly motivate them? Look around, people don’t have enough pride in their work to care where the check comes from.

Honestly, I think what’s really hurt the businesses is this new minimum wage increase. I knew that it would only hurt in the end. Raise minimum wage and it’s all good for a few days, maybe a few weeks. Companies have to raise prices to compensate and next thing you know the price of milk is reaching $4 a gallon. So they say “Let’s raise wages again” and it becomes a vicious cycle until companies can’t afford to pay employees because no one is going to pay $10 for milk or eggs …

The economy is pretty well doomed at this point, and I sadly fear that the United States of America as a whole is going to crash and burn in the next several years. I’d be surprised if it lasts a decade. I predict that the United Nations will come traipsing in here to ‘help’ and basically buy the country.
