The Blog

I like to ‘review’ older movies that I enjoy. I decided to drop a line for the great Mel Gibson classics based on his character ‘Mad Max’.

Mad Max

Setting Mel Gibson on a sure path to superstardom, this highly acclaimed “crazy collide-o-scope”(Newsweek) of highway mayhem “cinematically defined the postapocalyptic landscape” (TV Guide). Featuring eye-popping stunts that are “electrifying and very convincing” (Variety) and “an authentically nihilistic spirit” (The Village Voice), Mad Max is “pure cinematic poetry” (Time). In the ravaged near future, a savage motorcycle gang rules the road. Terrorizing innocent civilians while tearing up the streets, the ruthless gang laughs in the face ofa police force hell-bent on stopping them. But they underestimate one officer: Max Rockatansky (Gibson). And when the bikers brutalize Max’s best friend and family, they send him into a mad frenzy that leaves him with only one thing left in the world to live forrevenge!

This is the first installment, and very well done. It’s a lot of dubbed voices because at the time it was though that Mel Gibson’s voice was too thick with accent for the general populace. However, all in all it’s a good movie – probably my least favorite of the trilogy.

The Road Warrior

World War III has just ended and the world’s remaining inhabitants are on a desperate devastating struggle to survive. Gasoline is in short supply and those remaining turn on one another for the crude oil.

This is an amazing film. Dirty, gritty and violent: it’s really a look into what lies ahead if we continue down this rocky path in our oil crisis.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

Max arrives in the vicious city of bartertown and clashes with the diabolical aunty entity. left to die in the desert Max is rescuedand mistaken for a messiah by a group of oasis orphans.

This is my personal favorite out of the three. It’s also the least violent and harsh, though definitely throws you into the post-apocalyptic future where oil is life. Not only does it give the awesome performance by Mel Gibson, it also has Tina Turner as well has delusional (and kinda wacko) kids and Bruce Spence.

Conclusion: While this series isn’t for everyone (The Road Warrior has some hard visuals, including a very brief rape scene, some nudity and a bunch of gore) it is a pretty entertaining romp into what the future could hold for us all. Not for kids, that’s for sure.
